Earthquake shakes Tokyo area

An earthquake struck Tokyo Metropolitan area, shaking buildings and injuring five people in a shopping center. Japan's Meteorological Agency said that it occurred at 4:35 p.m. (JST), the epicenter of the 5.7 magnitude quake was 90 km deep in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, adding there was no risk of a tsunami. The earthquake caused a steel tower to collapse in Tokyo, and damaged the roof of a nearby building, it said. The quake led to the stoppage of many train services, public broadcaster NHK said.

This is the second largest earthquake after the one in San Francisco I have ever experienced. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

University of Wisconsin

友人がウィスコンシン大学のPost-Doctorate Research Fellowshipsとして研究をするためにアメリカに旅立った。1998年に来日。京都大学で博士号を取得し日本企業・研究機関で働いてきたが日本の風土に溶け込むことの難しさや上司との折り合いに心を砕き、新しい境地を目指してアメリカに職を求めるか、中国の故郷に戻るか、それとも日本に踏みとどまるか?いくつかの選択肢を熟慮してきた。今年はじめに日本に留まることを選択して新しい研究プロジェクトの一員に加わった。ところが運命のいたずらか、それまで見つからなかったアメリカでのポジションのオファーが時を同じくしてあった。ウィスコンシン大学の二人の教授から、自分の専門分野を深く掘り下げることのできる魅力的なプロジェクトへの参加要請があったとのことである。この機会を見逃したくない気持ちと同時に、参加したばかりの日本のプロジェクトを途中で放棄することへのためらいに悩んだ結果、渡米することに決めた。それが元来の望みでもあったが、日本と故郷への思いを断ち切ることにも逡巡したのではないか。その揺れる心は推し量るしかないが、決めた道が最良の選択であったと信じて、希望に満ちた新しい道を歩んでいって欲しいと願う。
